About this Organisation

London Design and Engineering UTC (University Technical College) is a mixed, 14-19 secondary college with sixth form, situated in Docklands Campus, University Way, in London. The college opened in September 2016 and provides education for students of all abilities from Key Stage 4 and above who would like to pursue a career in design and engineering.

UTCs are government-funded schools that teach 14-19 year old students technical and scientific subjects with a new approach; they are educating the inventors, engineers, scientists and technicians of tomorrow.  

The concept of UTCs was created by Lord Baker and Lord Dearing with the aim of bridging the skills gap by linking Industry with education. The Baker Dearing Educational Trust (BDT) was founded to develop and promote the concept of University Technical Colleges.

London Design and Engineering UTC is a student-focused, high-tech school which believes academic excellence and employer partners create the next generation of confident, independent, work-ready individuals. Its first-class facilities and specialist equipment, combined with its outstanding staff, provide experiences that will equip students with the skills needed to secure employment or routes into higher education. 

The UTC believes the curriculum it offers is delivered through interesting and exciting employer-led projects, enabling learning by doing. It also believes learning will be relevant and memorable and boost its students’ academic achievement.

London Design and Engineering UTC believes expert careers advice from its employer partners and university, mentoring, site visits and work placements, mean that every student has the opportunity to secure paid employment through a paid traineeship or apprenticeship – or a place in higher education, for which bursaries and scholarships are available.
